Serving the communities of: Calumet City, Hammond, Highland, Lansing, Schererville, St. John and Whiting.
Our charge is to work with our units to ensure their success and growth.
District Committee Meetings | 4th Monday of month | 7:00 - 8:00 pm
Thunderbird District committee meetings are typically held the 4th Monday of every month at 7:00 pm. Dates and locations are posted on the Council calendar. Consisting of chartered organization representatives (CORs) and elected district committee members, the district committee coordinates the functions of the district. The purpose of the district is to work through chartered organizations and community groups to organize and support successful units. The end result of effective district support is more youth members receiving a better program. All districts are responsible for carrying out four standard functions:
1) The membership function strives for growth through the organization of new Scouting units and through new members and adult volunteers joining existing units and working to retain current members.
2) The finance function sees that the district provides its share of funds to the total council operating budget.
3) The program function concentrates on helping Scouting units with camp promotion; special activities including community service; training adult volunteers; and youth advancement and recognition.
4) The unit service function provides direct coaching and consultation by district volunteers for unit adults to help ensure the success of every Scouting unit.

WHAT IS ROUNDTABLE? 
Roundtable is a form of commissioner service and supplemental training for volunteers at the unit level. The objectives of roundtables are to provide leaders with program ideas; information on policy and events; and training opportunities. It is a forum for sharing experiences and enjoying fun and fellowship with other Scout leaders. When skillfully executed, the roundtable experience will inspire, motivate, and enable unit leaders to provide a stronger program for their Scouts.
The goals of Roundtable are four-fold:
- To help motivate unit leaders and refresh their morale, enthusiasm, inspiration and vision.
- To provide unit leaders with relevant skills, techniques, ideas, information and know-how to make their unit operation successful. This instruction builds strong and exciting scouting programs.
- To provide resources to help unit leaders in their roles.
- Respect the time given by each Scout or Scouter that is attending-- it can never be replaced.

Training is an important part of learning to become an effective leader. The important Scouting position you hold will be easier and more effective once you develop the skills necessary to deliver a quality Scouting program every Scout desires. Every Scout deserves a trained leader.

Online Position-Specific Training
The BSA online training courses are being updated and new versions launched on January 2, 2019. The new courses feature closed captioning, updated content and a mobile-friendly format. Also, new position-specific learning plans are to take less time to complete. More
National Youth Leadership Training (NYLT)
National Youth Leadership Training, NYLT, is a one-week advanced leadership training experience for Scouts who want to become more effective in leading and teaching.
To be eligible to attend a course Scouts must be 14 years old or 13 years old and have completed 8th grade. Members of a Scouts BSA troop must also be First Class rank or above. In 2019 only, girls registered in Scouts BSA may attend NYLT without first achieving the First Class rank if they meet the age requirements and complete Introduction to Leadership Skills for Troops (ILST). Girls registered as Venturers do not need to achieve the First Class rank, but must complete Introduction to Leadership Skills for Crews (ILSC) prior to participating in NYLT.
