The District works closely with over 50 Scouting units (Packs, Troops, and Crews) to ensure the delivery of quality Scouting programs to 1,500 youth in the Southwest Suburbs and Southwest side of Chicago. The District offers a variety of opportunities from our annual Pinewood Derby at the Chicago Ridge Mall to our annual Cub Mobile Race in Oak Lawn!

South Side Irish St. Patrick's Day Parade
Come join in a Southside Tradition with Family and thousands of your closest friends.
“The best way to watch a parade is to be in it”
PTAC Scout units (Boy Scouts, Cub Scouts, and Adventure Crews) will be marching in the 40th Annual South Side Irish St. Patrick’s Day Parade on March 11. Our parade spot is being co-sponsored by Southtown Health Foods and Beverly Hills Garage. The Parade steps off at Noon at 103rd and Western. Pre staging begins at 10:45 on 103rd or Western north of 103rd. Our spot # will be emailed out to the unit contacts once we have it. Contact Michael G. Rudd from troop 607 at email@example.com to register your unit and the number of participants. The limit will be set at 150.
Important info: Scouts and Scout Leaders must be in class A uniforms with neck wear (neckerchief-tie-bolo tie). Parents are welcome to join as well. Be prepared for the weather that day. Ideally the Class A will be worn outside of layers underneath. If temperature or weather is a factor the appropriate outer layer should be worn or available. The route is 103rd to 115th and will dispense between 116th to 119th.
Units should bring your unit flag, staff, and carrying harness. The American Flag will be provided by Troop 607. All units are responsible for their participants transportation to and from the event as well any handing off to parents or guardian.

Boy Scouts Swimming or Lifesaving – March 5, 12,19, 26 and April 10 (*April 10, a Tuesday land session Our Lady of Loretto, 9003 S Kostner Ave, Hometown, IL).

Instructional swim is available. Please understand that this is not a how to swim class. Hopefully we can assist a Scout with some swimming skills become a better swimmer.
Time: 6:00PM – 8:00PM
Cost: $4 per swimming session – no charge for land session

Lifesaving & Swimming: Pre-registration and merit badge Blue Card required. Registration will be by Troop. Each Troop should have one representative appointed by Scoutmaster. For Lifesaving we have a limit of 8 – preference will be given by age. Please email firstname.lastname@example.org to register, Scout name, troop, phone number and birthdate by February 26th.
The following Lifesaving requirements must be completed & reviewed before the clinic.
Complete Second Class rank requirements 5a through 5d and First Class rank requirements 6a, 6b, and 6e. Please bring signed Scout book or note from Scoutmaster. While not required, we recommend that Scouts complete Swimming MB before attempting Lifesaving
We will attempt to help Scouts complete partial MBs starting on March 19.

Klondike Derby Results
Only a few days off on the calendar and we would have had plenty of snow. 130 total scouts and leaders participated in the weekends activities. A great time was had by all.
Klondike Derby Race
- 3rd place: Troops 619/607 Benders
- 2nd place: Troop 337 Bloody Blood Bloods
- 1st place: Troop 337 Foot Lettuce Bacon
No awards will be given out for the Drag Race because two units didn't get proper notification of the early start and both showed up at 3:30. Proper adjustment will be made to next years schedule to avoid something like this from repeating itself.
Please have the winning patrol attend February's round table for the presentation of the traveling trophy.
Fall Camporee Was a Success
The 2017 Arrowhead Fall Camporee was a great success. We had Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts come out to enjoy the festivities which included a Pumpkin Chuck where three awards were handed out. Here are some photos from the event:

The Chicago Scout Shop has uniform shirts, in all sizes, both youth and adult, ready for immediate sale with the Council Shoulder Patch (CSP), World Brotherhood and Centennial Circlet already sewn on. These shirts are $9.00 more than shirts without patches. The upcharge covers the cost of the patches so buy them while they are still in stock. The Scout Shop is offering sewing on Scout Shirts at the following rates: Small Patches are $3.00 Numerals are $1.00. Units can also purchase "one piece unit numbers" versus separate unit numbers for the same price. Unit Veteran and Sponsor bars can also be embroidered. Please contact the Chicago Scout Shop for all details, prepay your orders by credit card with Liliana, and Kevin will have all of your ordered items ready for pick up at Roundtable for you.
What do you do when a pole breaks on the newer light weight nylon tents? here is a new product at the Scout Shop. It is a tent pole "Sleeve" that will allow you to repair the broken pole. They also have figure 8 plastic loop and hooks that allow you to adjust lines without cutting them.

The monthly meetings include an opening session and breakout sessions. During the opening session, announcements and information relative to all attendees is given out. After the opening session, Boy Scout and Cub Scout leaders split up for sessions relative to their specific disciplines. It is important that all units have at least one representative attend read below on why.
Why you should attend
Roundtable is the best way to find out what's happening in the council and district, and is a great way to improve the program we provide to the youths in our units! The National website (www.scouting.org) states… ‘Scouting roundtables are a form of supplemental training for volunteers held monthly on a district basis The objective of roundtables is to give these leaders program ideas; information on policy, events, and training opportunities; and an opportunity to share experiences and enjoy fun and fellowship with other Scouting leaders. The roundtable commissioner and staff demonstrate elements of a model meeting that leaders may use as a pattern for their own unit meetings. As a result of the roundtable experience, unit leaders will be inspired, motivated, and able to provide a stronger program for their Scouts.’Wikipedia.com states… ‘the term Roundtable first appears in Wace’s Roman de Brut, a Norman language adaptation of Geoffrey of Monmouth's Historia Regum Britanniae finished in 1155. Wace says King Arthur created the Round Table to prevent quarrels among his barons, none of whom would accept a lower place than the others. As its name suggests, the round table has no head, implying that everyone who sits there has equal status.’ I think King Arthur was a pretty smart guy! Some of us have been leaders for what seems like years. And we think we know it all. But it is never too late to learn something new! Ask yourself this… would you go to a doctor that still prescribed leeches for their patients? At one time, leeches were the preferred medical practice for numerous ailments. But over time, doctors learned that other techniques were better and safer! For the same reason, PLEASE consider attending Roundtable.
The Boy Scout breakout sessions provide an opportunity for leaders to network with each other and to learn best practices for running Packs and Dens.

Upcoming Training Events
- BALOO training is required for all camping trips. While some training is mandatory to be hands-on outdoors, the "book training" can be completed online.
- Scoutmaster Specific Training will be Dec. 2, 2017 at the First Methodist Church in Evergreen Park.
- IOLS training will also take place soon. Check the website for the latest info.
- Again, please do not put off registering for workshops or training. Slots fill fast, and space and resources are generally limited.
FOS CAMPAIGN CHAIR
It gives me great pleasure to announce the appointment of our 2017 Family FOS (Friends of Scouting) campaign Chairman. Mike Maddox will be the Arrowhead District Chairman of our FOS campaign. Mike has shown the ability and commitment needed to follow through and get the job done.
One of the first tasks that Mike has, is to contact the leaders of all scouting units in Arrowhead to schedule a FOS program. Most units plan a FOS presentation during their Blue & Gold’s or Green &Gold’s normally during the month of February. Mike will coordinate his FOS team members to insure all of the units in Arrowhead have the supplies, materials and council provided incentive items for a successful unit FOS event. Our goal is to have every unit participate by scheduling a FOS program.
On behalf of the Arrowhead Key 3, John Lennon – District Commissioner, Pat Romcoe – District Executive and myself please join us in welcoming Mike to his new important role in our district.
Scouts sell Trail’s End Popcorn.
Popcorn sales have been a Scouting tradition, and they continue to be the main source of our fundraising dollars for our Packs and Troops through the District. Selling popcorn can be a fun and rewarding experience that teaches lifelong lessons.
At the beginning of each Scouting year, families are provided literature on the Popcorn Program during the popcorn kickoff celebration. Selling popcorn not only helps our organization but it provides the Scouts with great skills in the way of salesmanship, networking, business, personal management, community involvement and family participation. These skills lead to a sense of strong self-worth, leadership and a basic understanding of how money works.
We have a wide variety of popcorn from which to choose. From our popular Butter Microwave Popcorn to our limited edition tins, there are many options.
We know, however, that some people just can’t eat popcorn. For those folks who wish to support Scouts but don’t want the popcorn, you can buy popcorn that will be sent to our American Armed Forces to brighten their day!
Friends of Scouting (FOS)
Please sign up your Pack, Troop, or Crew for a 2018 FOS presentation and make a pledge of support to Scouting at your unit FOS presentation. A strong Scouting program requires good outdoor experiences, trained leaders and financial resources to assure operations and camps continue to be the quality our youth deserve. Your unit support of FOS is part of making Scouting strong. Take a few moments to register your unit and support Scouting at your unit FOS presentation.
